Challenges for Official Statistics

Denise Lievesley
Incoming President of the International Statistical Institute

Pressures on the budgets of statistical agencies and a concern to reduce response burden have lead to an increasing use of existing administrative data for statistical purposes.

Denise will discuss some of the challenges involved in this changing emphasis of statistical work whereby statistical functions are embedded in broader information activities. She will highlight the need for us to integrate survey and administrative sources to provide more efficient complex estimates.

Denise will also talk about some of the challenges in establishing secondary uses services in these new statistical environments. She will draw on her experience of working in the UK in the health area as well as her contacts with a wide range of national and regional statistical offices gained whilst at the UN.
